Remember in the early 1990’s when some of the magazines were trying to put catalytic converters on old hot rods to make them pass the sniffer test here in California and calling them “green”? They had engines with tiny camshafts and weren’t much fun to drive at all. I’m not sure if they thought it would sell magazines or just make the rest of the eco freak asshats quit bothering us hot rodders. Either way, one of the cars that was built during this era was the Thom Taylor designed 1955 Chevy they called The Mean Green Machine. I’m not sure how mean it was, but you can certainly find out because it’s for sale once again. I say again, because this car is famous enough to have changed hands several times. The gentleman that owns it now lives in Southern Illinois and has it up and ready for a new owner.
It’s a cool looking period piece for sure, and our understanding is that it has been “tweaked” to be a much nicer car than it was originally. In fact, magazine editors from the time have been pretty vocal about their lack of enthusiasm for this project back in they day, and the lack of quality in the build. Through the grapevine we had heard that it was repainted once, but the seller doesn’t state it so we are not sure.
If it was ours, since we’d like to bash on the green portion of this particular build, we’d put a nasty snorting blown Big Block Chevrolet in it with some more wheel and tire out back and let it eat. Oh, and we’d spray the piss out of it because it already has nitrous installed. It would be a waste of a good already mounted Nitrous bottle otherwise. As much tire smoke as possible please!
Here is what the seller has to say:

That guy is smoking crack…
It was for sale here in California a few months ago for $24,000 or so… So I guess it took an out of state buyer to take the bait! Hahahaha!!
Looks like he put a new interior in it too.
Good luck on the sale.
