I like Novas. I always have. And this model of GTO is like a Nova but with cooler tail lights and grill. The bumpers are hideous, but the rest of it could be made to be cool as hell. That’s why I would want this one. I’d leave all the GTO specific stuff on it I could and then maybe do a Pontiac engine in it. Or a turbo LS and build it into a bad ass pro touring machine. That’s probably the direction I’d go. Can you imagine carving corners in this one? After all, it is a GTO baby!
The seller doesn’t give a lot of info about this one, because it is basically stock, but we kind of like that it is a blank slate. It still has the original console and gauges, grille and lights, and that shaker hood scoop that everyone knows and loves from the Firebirds. You’d have to keep that no matter what, cause it is rad.

I would save the turbo LS for something other than the Pontiac especially if it’s going to live on the street, but then again, I’d rather pull tree stumps when the pedal hits the floor than hear small compressor whine.
One thing’s for sure, I always (or would love to) forget just how damn ugly those malaise-era bumpers are. Chuck them, and tuck and roll the fron and rear, then throw some basic hot rod stuffs at that 350, trade the slush box for a M21 or M22, paint the passenger front fender to match, then cruise until the mediocre brakes and slushy suspension pisses you off. Replace that crap when time and dough permits, and keep fixing whatever else that fails in between Friday nights. Done.
Yup. Tuck and trim the bumpers for starters. Swap in a Camaro/Firebird dash. Then pop for a Ram Air IV spec 400 or a SD 455 between the fenders, just to really justify that shaker hood.
There was a local repair shop owner in town that had a ’74 GTO with a 455 swapped in and did it move! Tried buying it a few times but would never sell.
As a former owner of 4 (yes 4!) \’73 Buick Apollos and one \’74 Olds Omega (which had the even-uglier-than -the-\’73 -bumpers, like this one has)– I always thought someone should graft onto these cars a \’70-\’72 Firebird rear bumper and a \’67-\’68 camaro front bumper. I think the entire front clip of a \’67 of \’68 Camaro might even bolt up and have good bodyline matchup with minimal work. Just a thought–
That said, they were pretty fun cars- even if parts were a little harder to come by than a Nova\’s.
$4500 is about as cheap as you will ever see for a legit 74 GTO. They were the ugly duckling after thought of GTOs. I want one with hatch back and tent option!
It may be ugly as hell to some people but it has more soul and character than a lot of cars today.
I\’d take one and restomod it.
