Own Your Data: Tim McAmis Talks Data Storage, Data Ownership, And More For Your Race Car

Drag racing, and racing in general, has become very technologically advanced in recent years and that means that even at the lowest level you are probably using some kind of data logging when you race your car. Whether you are using a Racepak, Holley EFI, Motec, or any other engine management system, there can be a lot of data from each run or lap or whatever, and that information is important and valuable for you to be able to tune and control what the car is doing. But what if you aren’t taking care of that data? Well listen to good old Uncle Tim here and you’ll see why it is important to take care of it both physically, and legally.

Wait, what? Yeah, this is about storing data on your laptop, drives, the cloud, etc, but it is also about establishing ownership of that data if you have someone else helping to tune your car or run your program. Who owns the data is incredibly important, and with the number of tuners for hire that have become the norm in racing, these are important things to consider so you don’t find yourself in a lurch if you decide to part ways.

Think about it, if you hire a tuner, have a great season with her, and then decide that you’ve got enough data and knowledge with your new combo so you want to go racing on your own. Or your kid has been learning and is now up to speed and capable. Or you hit a rough patch and can’t afford to pay a tuner anymore if you are going to continue racing. Yeah, all those things could happen. Well that data is yours if it came from your car, but making sure you have an understanding and an agreement with your tuner on who owns what should you part ways is VERY important. Again, listen to Uncle Tim and you’ll see what we’re talking about here.

AS USUAL, THE LANGUAGE IS COLORFUL. KEEP THIS IN MIND IF YOU ARE AT WORK
