Big Green One: This 1973 Dodge Coronet Is Dream-Worthy

Big Green One: This 1973 Dodge Coronet Is Dream-Worthy

Okay, let’s call it right now: if there’s another Mopar in my future, it’s going to look like a 1970s B-body sedan. Between this car, Uncle Tony’s “Bottle Rocket” build, and the 1973 Satellite I should’ve made a play for back in the day, I’m sold. For years I saw them as stockers, thin tires, low-power small-block machines that weren’t really worth much. Lately, I’m digging the haunches, loving the early hoop bumpers, and finding that I’d almost rather have one of these than a Satellite two-door, or a Road Runner. But it’s got to have attitude. It’s got to have a menace that only appears when the back end has that tell-tale hike of strengthened leaf springs, when the wheelwell is filled to the brim with rubber, and when the exhaust sets off any gearhead’s radar on first fire.

Or, in other words…I’ll take this one. You’re seeing it’s maiden pass down the strip at Route 66 Raceway, and besides being way too clean for an Illinois car, it’s just got the right amount of everything going for it. Gorgeous paint, a great thump from the 383, even a very nice interior. One look at this Coronet and you have to wonder why Roscoe and Enos just didn’t get somebody to spin a wrench or two under their cars so they could have a fair fight against the Duke boys.
