After the absolute five-ring circus that was LS Fest, complete with thousands (tens of thousands?) of spectators, the Buick GS Nationals looked downright tame by comparison. But any judgement on the car types was stifled as I checked in at the main gate, where the woman selling tickets was more than happy to tell me about the Grand National that had just blasted a low-five 1/8th mile time and that I had just missed it. Truth was, I had missed most of the GS Nationals…I didn’t realize it was a multi-day affair, so when I finally hauled my sorry hide out to Beech Bend, they were in the middle of eliminations, which explained the trailered G-bodies passing me on the way out of the strip. But that doesn’t mean I missed some great iron from the Tri-Shield brigade. In fact, if you are a lover of all things Grand National, you could find it either out in the show field or within one of the many racing classes on the property. And if you like your Buicks a little bit older, no worries there. The one class I was surprised to not see out there were the front-drivers. Buick sold millions of cars in the 1990s and 2000s with blown V6s that could run…where were they? Maybe I missed them, but I didn’t miss Stage II Gran Sports and intercooled T-types!
