Everything about this footage should have been the same as any other race: a Fox Mustang and a catfish Camaro line up next to each other on the strip at Thunder Valley in Oklahoma. It’s a no-prep deal, which means that the stands are packed and there are plenty of eyeballs on what’s about to go down. The flagman signals the start, the cars launch, and the Camaro enters the pedal program…still, nothing out of the ordinary. Then you see it…one small spark from underneath the hood. The next thing anyone knows, the Camaro has become a green-flamed comet streaking down the quarter-mile.
Brent Self is probably thanking every last bit of safety gear he had on that he got out unharmed from the fireball. An injector called it quits and in the middle of the pedalfest the motor lifted a head…the fire and the flames were pretty much a promise at that point. So was a full-on locked brake stop as Self was more than ready to get out of harm’s way. The car can be repaired, the fire suit did it’s job, and Self will race another day. That’s how it is supposed to go…that, and maybe he can take a look at still shots to put together a new paint scheme for the Camaro. The green flames look absolutely wicked!
