The three of us each have our individual marks for the beginning of “the season” each year. For Chad, it’s the Grand National Roadster Show. For Brian, it’s about five seconds after everybody screams out “Happy New Year!” And for me, while I stay busy and working year-round, top gear is engaged the moment I start planning roadtrips for video coverage. Come this time next week, I’ll be at Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas for the first round of the MidWest Pro Mods racing series. I’ve been looking forward to seeing Keith Haney and his merry band of noisemakers return to the dragstrip for another year of great action.
This footage of Kenda 660 Drag Radial racers testing out their machines at Willowbank Raceway is the kind of appetizer I need before I make the drive to Texas next week. It’s the usual mix of V8s, six cylinders and rotaries, Australin beauties, old-school Japanese awesomeness, and the occasional American expat that’s come out to play. There’s some bad boys in this lineup, including that Torana that is going for the sky, and the soundtrack is just what I need after a month of “Jingle Bells”, a week of “Auld Lang Syne” and a month of the hard coughing of flu season.
