Over the last week we’ve given you everything that the camera could capture at the Holley Hot Rod Reunion 2017. We walked the show fields over and over, trying to find cars we may have missed…and we might have missed more than a few! We tried to cover the action at the drag strip, and we did both while making sure that we weren’t going to heatstroke out. It was a fun weekend, but the end to the fun is the thing to truly not miss at the Hot Rod Reunion. Once the racing program is done, the show car winners are staged up in the lanes and are brought through one by one for their awards. Then, the participants in the Cacklefest are brought through on a parade lap and are introduced to the audience. And then…well, then the real fun begins. Those that can be started in place are fired off, while the cars that need to be pushed are started at the far end of the track and are driven up towards the Christmas tree, where they park against the walls of the strip and proceed to fill the air with the unmistakable sensation of thousands of horsepower and the therapeutic effects of burned nitromethane. In the setting sun of western Kentucky, the flames from the headers weren’t so apparent, but the audience didn’t seem to mind one bit…with every rap of the throttle, eyes got bigger, cheers got louder and the jaws of young ones who might not have seen such a spectacle before dropped open just a little bit further.
