The Holley Hot Rod Reunion kicked off with a bang this year. Ok, that’s not quite correct. It kicked off with a lot of bangs…and rumbling…and rainfall. The opening to the reunion kicked off with a very healthy thunderstorm that flooded low-lying areas, knocked down decent sized branches, and filled the rain gauge at BangShift Mid-West with inches of water. This has been par for the course for the Hot Rod Reunion since I started shooting events…at least one day out of the event span, Beech Bend gets a natural wash-down. As I drove down the lane into the track, show cars were driving out into town. One would expect many of the participants to pack it up and call it a day, with plans that involved a restaurant and maybe a nice nap at the hotel. But many didn’t leave. Many stayed, with their cars parked in the grass in the show fields to be enjoyed with little more than the windows rolled up and maybe a bag over the blower if the engine was out in the elements. When the rains ceased just after lunch, cars started to trickle back in as the pump removed the floodwater from the circle track. Fingers crossed, the rest of the weekend looks pretty good weather-wise and we hope to see more cars out on the grounds!
