Some things are just universally awesome. A desert truck flying over the desert floor at speed is awesome. A drifter nailing the perfect run while making it look easy is wicked. And the wheelstand is just badass. You can talk about whether or not the suspension is right or wrong, or if the wheelstand is useful at all, but the race is one thing, the show is another. You won’t win the race sending the nose to the sky, but you’ll have the crowd eating out of the palm of your hand for the entire event.
The Byron Wheelstanding Competition skipped a year, having been rained out in 2018, and the competitors were more than ready to see just how far into the air they could stick their noses. Familiar names like Brian Ambrosini and “Hollywood” Wes Newman came out to play but the winner of this year’s event was Chris Pearce and his Chevy-powered Ford Pinto, which carried the wheels for 590 feet down Byron’s strip. Rick Johnson’s 1960 Chevrolet Bel Air was doing the X-Frame Twist, and Greg Broshous’s “High And Wild” Chevy II was pulling gears down the track as the only manual-trans car in the competition.
