Ford seemed to have a problem with Lincoln and Mercury having any kind of real performance cred in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Thunderbird was the star of the show and that was going to be it. But…maybe it’s just us, but that kind of structured BS doesn’t fly with enthusiasts. Mercury was flip-flopping between a musclecar with a fluffier interior and a personal luxury machine and was spinning it’s wheels. Lincoln, on the other hand, knocked a line drive out of the park with the Mark VII, especially in it’s gussied-up LSC trim. The short definition: take everything good about a 5.0 Mustang, add legroom and a bit of visual class, call it good. I knew that they were something to behold when a neighbor bought one and my grandfather Ken derided it as a “nice car, if it didn’t look like some clap-trap hot rod”.

Thirty years old, the body still looks great in monochrome black and is one of the few cars that deserves the “less is more” approach to modifications. Lincoln got the overall look right. But 225 horsepower was good for 1988…in 2018, not so much. Someone else out there agreed fully when they built the wee out of this particular example. There’s a third pedal and an air snail breathing into the mill. Details? The only one the ad gives us is that the air conditioning is still present and functional…for a Phoenix car, it better be. This is the kind of machine that can dust anything that’s running the Anthem Grand Prix out of Phoenix on I-17 North…just drop a gear and disappear out of the city and into the saguaro!
