Sleepers Versus The Upper Crust: Netflix Is Rolling Out “Fastest Car”…Interested?

Sleepers Versus The Upper Crust: Netflix Is Rolling Out “Fastest Car”…Interested?

It used to be that you had to hunt to find any kind of show about cars on television that wasn’t MotorWeek or TNN’s coverage (RIP). Now, you are spoiled for choice, but some of those choices just suck. Ramped-up drama, bullshit deadlines, and reality television situations that couldn’t be acted better by trained thespians are just part of the problem. Between you and me, reader, if it isn’t coverage of an actual event or a show in the vein of TopGear or Chasing Classic Cars, where there’s a story and it’s either educational or honest entertainment instead of reality script stuff, I don’t watch anymore. The cars themselves aren’t enough to keep my attention.

But after seeing this cross my YouTube feed, I don’t know what to think. This is a trailer for an upcoming Netflix show called “Fastest Car”. The premise is simple enough: three “sleepers” and three top-tier machines square off. The idea of pitting “built” against “bought” is good enough for investigation, sure…who wouldn’t love to see a McLaren take on the Bisimoto-built Honda Odyssey? That would be a killer deal! Some of the sleepers are known in the community: Rob “Chairslayer” Parson’s “Lunch Money” Dodge hot rod and Bisimoto’s Odyssey aren’t hiding anything, but the Mitsubishi Mirage-looking thing has to be packing a monster 4G63 setup and all-wheel-drive, and the square-body Chevy truck and the blue S-10 have our curiosity piqued.

What has us questioning the show appears with two individuals in particular: the obviously rich guy whose chrome/purple wrapped Lamborghini looks like a Need For Speed video game car’s overall attitude has us cringing and the guy who is going off at 10/10ths about Detroit makes us wonder if the drama is ramped up here, too. Drama is bad. Watching a Viper lining up next to a ratty, $500 Craigslist special Olds Cutlass packing serious tire is good. Take a look at the trailer below and tell us your thoughts!

I think all the BS gum-flapping, $#!+ talking makes all of these shows unwatchable. If they’d just tell us about the cars and race, it’d be great. But I’d never watch these fools. My IQ would drop 3 points just having to listen to them.

The problem with this show is pitting a road course car against a drag car. I would like to see someone build a sreet legal track day car against one of those $100K+ Lambo’s. Maybe buying an old road course stock car and make it street legal. Always wanted to see a mid-90’s Monte Carlo built.

Drama. It does not add to the bottom line, it destroys the storyline that is behind the vision of the creator in the first place.

Drama is easy to portray, and it is easy for the camera to pick up, but drama does not animate the car, the builder, or the story.

    No I am not interested.

I liked “are you faster than a redneck” with the “that thing got a hemi” guy. Now that’s funny right there… Cars seemed pretty legit and the roll racing on a road course was pretty good.

Just about as stupid as Street Outlaws. Straight from the Discovery channel playbook. Drama, drama, drama, Who thinks this crap up. Shame on Netflix for falling for this nonsense. Won’t watch it either. You guys are as bad as the TEN, thinking every piece of crap with a bolt-on is some kind of bad ass machine. That kind of thinking helped ruin the car magazine and spawn stupidity like Roadkill.

It was a total blast working on the show and I think if you choose to tune in, you\’ll be pleasantly surprised. From a racing perspective we made a strong effort to get the participants lined up, ready to race and focused on the task at hand — driving.

Thank you for all of your thoughts on the matter!

It comes down to satisfying the wants and desires of motoring enthusiasts like you (and me) — we hope the show does that for you — in abundance!

    Cheers!
