(Words and Photos by Joe Grippo) The Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series is the sportsmen wing of the NHRA and we here at BangShift are huge fans. Each of the seven NHRA regional divisions holds several events throughout the year where hundreds of the baddest racers show up looking for all important points toward their World Championship aspirations. Points earned at these divisional events in conjunction with Camping World Series Points are tallied up at the end of the season and the best finishes at each series determine the top ten and champions in the world and each division. NHRA requires a certain amount of “grade points” to be accumulated before being granted entry to the national events, LODRS Divisionals are key events to earn these important points. That is probably why 540+ racers showed up to Maple Grove Raceway over Memorial Day Weekend.
Lohnes and I live in the Northeast, which is NHRA Division 1. The D1 schedule spans seven race weekends from as far north as Epping, New Hampshire, and as far south as Virginia Motorsports Park in Petersburg, Virginia. One of the largest is the Maple Grove event in Mohnton, Pa. The Grove hosted almost 119 Stock Eliminator and 85 Super Stock Eliminator cars and trucks alone! These just happen to be personally, my favorite classes in all of Drag Racing. Muscle cars (modern and vintage), dragging the bumper with all varieties of big and small block power, stick shift, and automatics, this stuff should trip the trigger of any BangShifter worth his salt.
Check your local track schedule or the NHRA website for the nearest Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series near you and check it out. Support your local racetrack regardless.
