This Subaru-powered VW Type 2 Runs Twelves All Day Long At Santa Pod

Ok, where are all of the Volkswagen bus fans? I know you’re out there. The VW Type 2 platform is just as quintessential Volkswagen as the Beetle, and in my world…well, sorry, but McTaggart isn’t a fan of old-school VW. I’m not even 100% sure if this double-cab truck layout is a Transporter, Kombi or any of the other names. What I do know is that it appears to have been drug out from behind a warehouse after a forty-year nap and, with minimal prep and a Subaru heart transplant, is now a dragstrip terror in England. The boxer mill is pushing 560bhp and this formerly unloved work vehicle is now capable low 13 second quarter miles whenever you ask it to run the strip. Forget the smoking Bus with the reedy exhaust note, this Type 2 has the Subaru snarl to back up the runs. With a little more dialing in and some attention to shift points, twelve second quarters on a regular basis aren’t out of the question!

Cool transporter, but I never associated Subaru and the word ‘snarling’ together

Snarling ? Really ? Where you been hiding …. under a rock ? Heck … there’s modified Subaru’s out there that’ll make mince meat of your 67 … in a straight line or on a road course .. regardless of what you may or may not have under the hood .

No insult intended by the way . Just a statement of fact . Some of those properly modified WRX/STi’s are absolute …. killers … and not to be toyed with

YEah, WRXs and STis are scary fast. And I always think of Subarus more as rumbling. However you describe it, I love the sound of a tuned-up Subie.

It may run 12’s but looks like it could be quicker since its a slug off the line.

    I’s right here McTaggert !

And yeah …. this is … kind of cool … but its cool factor could of gone up at least another 75% had he stuffed one of those incredible POLO Porsche 4’s in the back … rather than the useful but somewhat mundane [ and over done ] Subaru conversion

Beetle Buses … be they in bus or transporter configuration … they just aint nuthin much better on the whole of the planet Earth

to the Guitar Slinger/colorado kid – you would actually say that thing sounds better than an American V-8? at any REALLY? You think that thing is snarling???? My ’67 that I bought new, by the way, don’t need to prove any thing to anyone,…oh that poor Transporter….snarling?? thanks for the laugh!!

Oh it never ends with you does it? Oh my, no one will ever be as clever as you. I feel honored to have my opinion dissected by such an intellect. How long do you suppose that thin-wall block will last? half shafts? I know guys that race such cars at Summit Point and other places. Part of their maintenance is replacing them, the valve train and usually the short block at some point during the season. Sure anything will preform , if you twist its tail hard enough

That must be the European version of the FarmTruck. It’s weaksauce in comparison, but that’s typical.

    The ultimate sleeper?

It’s a shame the driver doesn’t know shit about drag racing though – I think with a competent driver this beast could pull 9 seconds at least!

Judging by his reaction times he might as well be driving the standard article!

I’ve always loved air cooled VWs. Been wanting a transporter or kombi for forever. The price is just way out of reach at this point. Maybe Dynacorn or someone will make the body shells or something. Anyway the truck is sick, but I wonder where they mounted the radiator. I’m a subi fan too, but the swap can be pricey to do right.I wonder how he would run with a Mazda 13B?
