A Restomodded Dino? V8 Power And Modern Upgrades Work For The Junior Ferrari!

A Restomodded Dino? V8 Power And Modern Upgrades Work For The Junior Ferrari!

The Dino 246 is one of Ferrari’s crowning achievements. It was one of the first high-production cars, yet it was a V6-powered machine that sported the first electronic ignition by the company, the first with direct rack-and-pinion steering, and of course, honored the memory of the late son of Enzo Ferrari, Alfredo “Dino” Ferrari. The goal of the Dino brand was to compete more favorably with Porsche, while at the same time not diluting the Ferrari brand by building a cheaper car with a smaller engine. Given that the younger Ferrari had designed the V6 used in the car up until his death from Duchenne muscular dystrophy in 1956, it was only right that the name was used.

The 246 was lauded as a masterpiece, a well-balanced machine that Enzo might not have been that happy with. Legend has it that he said something to the effect of “Don’t you put my name on that piece of shit” at one point in time. If only Alfredo could’ve lived to have seen what his car became..once the throwaway Ferrari, they now trade for over $300,000 on the market. But there’s room to improve, right? Nothing against the 2.4L V6, but 195 horsepower and 166 ft/lbs of torque was an affront to everything else in the Ferrari stable. And nowadays, cool as it is, as sexy as those curves are, getting spanked by a Toyota iM at a stoplight drag sucks.

Enter the Dino Monza 3.6 Evo. Does that even really exist? Kind of. Twenty-five of these machines will be created, powered by a V8. This thing is a restomod…or, if you’re familiar with the term, an “outlaw” build, after being inspired by some Porsche fans with modified machines. Ferrari is probably pissed off at the idea of a modified car, but for a rich man’s level of machine, we have to appreciate the effort put into this car. Now rocking 400 horsepower and some very minor upgrades, this Dino is even more of a middle finger to the company that the original V6 version ever could have been…and it’s all that much better for it. We might never get a shot at owning or driving one, but if you had the money, you know that you’d try to do the same thing too…don’t lie!

When I saw the magic numbers 3.6 I knew that this wasn’t polluted by an LS! Ferrari should take this in house and put it into series production as it could prove to be one of their best ever sellers and compete with the Porsche 911.

Pretty amusing how Ferrari corporate was upset over this one. They seem to have a “Our cars are perfect, even when they aren’t” mentality. Imagine what they’d have done if the Dino had a Ford 427 with as many repro parts from the GT40 program as possible.

Gut it and rebuild like a kit car. Factory Five is your friend. Way way cheaper and better.
