Andy Bozell Sets 3/8-Mile Oval Record With Insane 9.465-Second Lap

That’s a staggering headline, isn’t it? And yet as part of Kalamazoo Speedway’s “Call of the Wild” event on September 3, Andy Bozell’s highly modified Super Late Model car smashed the ⅜-mile oval record with a totally mind-bending 9.465-second lap that averaged 142 mph. Those are positively insane numbers on a short oval. Bozell’s run shattered the previous record set last year by Mike Shewchuk, who had run a 9.924-second lap to become the first driver under 10 seconds. The previous record holder before Shewchuk? That would be Bozell, who is a member of the Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame for a laundry list of championships and big-time wins.

The Call of the Wild event includes essentially the oval equivalent of something like the Pro class in World Time Attack, where there are essentially no rules governing things like aerodynamic elements. That means builders can add sprint car wings and billboard-size sideboards with air-grabbing sub-elements all over them to produce fantastic downforce and lateral grip. The end result is one of the world’s most fantastic explorations of the far reaches of custom-built specials to chase records.
