I think it’s fair to say that most people would agree that Formula 1 Grand Prix racing has been a leader in race car advancement since its inception. From a horsepower, braking, and aerodynamic perspective, Formula 1 has pushed boundaries and shown the masses just what is possible with huge budgets and brilliant minds. But while people think about today’s technology, it is the advancements of the 1970’s that are sometimes most recognizable. Such is the case with the Tyrrell P34, which has become one of the most recognizable and iconic cars in Formula 1 racing history. Not only was it really good, but also really easy to spot with its 6 wheels. Yes, this car has four front wheels and tires, in a specially constructed 10 inch diameter, which was utilized to get the front wheels out of the air. Because they were so small, there needed to be more of them to provide the required mechanical grip. I find it curious that the 10 inch wheel is the same size as that found in racing Minis. Just saying.

In this video you’ll see Jackie Stewart, the Flying Scot, taking one for a spin and giving a complete play by play. This dude was the master and we really enjoy watching and listening to this great in-car and on-car footage.

Would you go back to F1 racing with that “mink wrapped” french chic at your side? 🙂
