Touring car racing is awesome, regardless of what sanctioning body is in charge. BTCC, DTM, NATCC, V8 SuperStars…we adore it all. The combination of production vehicles modified to race, realistic racing homologation requirements, and short, sprint-type runs guarantees aggressive drivers and healthy competition. South Africa has a healthy touring car scene as well, and has created such beasts as the Chevrolet Firenza Can-Am and the Ford Capri Perana, both of which were small V8-powered stompers of the day. In hunting down some historical footage we found this clip of a ten-lap dual league race at Kyalami Circuit in South Africa, that has the runners of the day doing battle on a hot afternoon. There are Volkswagen Golfs, Alfa Romeo GTVs, 5.0L powered Ford Sierras, Nissan Skylines and a BMW 7-series that looks to always be on the cusp of drifting off into the dry grass at any given point in time. Ten laps, tire concerns, and a desire to cross the line first make for fun racing…check it out!
