Classic YouTube: The 1986 IMSA Races At Road America – Champion Spark Plug Challenge And Kelly American Challenge!

The more I dig into IMSA racing from the 1980s, the more I like. The vehicles are exactly what I look for: road vehicles that are identifiable with little to no effort. Ok, that might be stretching the truth quite a bit if you look at the Oldsmobile Toronados and Buick Somersets that were running in the Kelly American Challenge that year, but compared to other silhouette race cars we’ve seen, they’re still rather stock looking. And the drivers were not afraid, regular race car or tube-frame special, to drive them like they had stolen them around Road America. Whether you are into seeing the small cars of the season getting beat on, like Dodge Daytonas, Chevrolet Cavaliers, and “Honda Acuras” (early Integras) or you want to see the V8 Camaros and Firebirds taking on the screaming V6-powered Olds and Buick offerings in the Kelly series, there’s plenty for you here and even if you aren’t bothered one way or another, the racing is tight and exciting. Blown engines, cars that are super-twitchy under braking…it’s a perfect way to kill some time as you relax this afternoon!
