Now that much of the U.S. is in the middle of bathing their assorted extremities in the summer heat-wave sweat, what better way could we celebrate than by pulling out some classic Finnish ice racing footage? This four minutes of Finnish 8-millimeter film just reinforces that old stereotype that everyone from Finland surely must drive sideways 365 days a year, though the Finns relish the chance to do it on snow. Or when people are watching. So this is really the best of both worlds.
Unlike a typical vintage ice-racing film you might dig up on the Internets, this one carries a distinctly European flair. There are no American grocery getters, but I spot countless Minis, a bunch of Saab 96s, a Volvo PV544, maybe a Volvo Duett station wagon, a Mercedes-Benz W110 (I think), a classic BMW 700, and even a plush Citroën DS.
