Video: European hill climber tackles French mountain sideways – Heck of a show!

The European Hill Climb Championship remains one of the major draws for the slightly crazy, pitting racers against the clock on mountain roads throughout the continent. The drivers flog everything from vintage Euro-only cars to high-downforce sports racers, usually with a couple thousand also-crazies scattered along the route to watch. The sounds are always impressive caroming off the hills while the cars are blindingly quick and, typically, planted firmly on the road.

Unfortunately for racers in southern France’s Col St. Pierre Hill Climb, the roads were a bit damp and while somebody probably won, the real show came from veteran hill climber Nicolas Dufour. Nico spent, as far as I can tell, the entire hillclimb in his BMW M3 sideways with as much slip angle and throttle as one might dare with wooded hillside looming to one side and cliff face to the other. Dufour never relented, though, and much to the soggy French crowd’s delight, he made the trip up the mountain safely and in true style.
