Money No Object: 1969 Shelby GT350 Race Car And Trailer

Money No Object: 1969 Shelby GT350 Race Car And Trailer

I can’t lie, I might have squeaked when I saw this thing. Check off the list: 1969-70 Shelby Mustang body? Period-correct Trans Am appearance? A legit racing pedigree and not just a dolled-up restoration? You bet your ass it is. The cars were bigger than ever, and Shelby was about to exit the program, but I love the final Shelby Mustangs more than I probably should. So…here’s the thing: it’s not a real Shelby. And I do not care one bit. I don’t care that it is only a Shelby in body form. This car looks monstrous.

What you have here is a re-dressed NASCAR road-racing chassis from 1977. Engine, 427ci small-block Ford. Trans, a Jerico 4-speed. The car was completed in 1992 and has a solid racing history out West, including Sonoma, Laguna Seca and Las Vegas Motor Speedway, among others. And you get a 25′ triple-axle car hauler with extra goodies included in the deal.

My words won’t do this car justice. I’d change only two things: the paint for a contemporary Shelby setup, maybe bronze with black stripes or black with gold stripes, and I would add two square driving lights below the grille opening, like the stock car,  back into the program. After that? Wherever this thing could scream it’s heart out, that’s where I’d go.

Shelby’s hatred of Enzo Ferrari is well-known. In Shelby’s eyes, Enzo’s drivers were disposable, and that kept an ember of unadulterated rage glowing bright within the Texan. But there is one thing that they had in common, if nothing else: they were happy when their cars were being driven hard and fast by competent people. Here’s hoping whoever scores this GT350 is competent.
