Morning Symphony: 13B Rotary Power In A Group B Mazda RX-7!

Morning Symphony: 13B Rotary Power In A Group B Mazda RX-7!

Didn’t think Mazda played in Group B rally, did you? It’s true…for the 1983-1984 season, Mazda Rally Team Europe (MRT) prepared naturally-aspirated, first generation RX-7s for competition, and unlike other manufacturers, only had to produce twenty instead of 200 homologation copies due to a loophole (the RX-7 had already been homologated via Group 1, Group 2 and Group 4 upgrades). Unlike the other manufactures, though, Mazda stuck with N/A power, rear wheel drive, and light weight, which would have been just fine for 1980 or before, but everybody had seen the writing on the wall with the Audi Quattro coupes and their four wheel drive, and even the rear-drive only Lancia 037 Rally would’ve spanked the rotary around the world and all the way back to Japan. But still, we like this little howler. If you squint a little, you can almost see a bit of Lancia Stratos in it, and it follows the Stratos’ winning formula a little bit closer than any of the Group B cars that were out there.
