Morning Symphony: C3 Corvettes Barking At The Spa Classic 2017

Are you a fan of disco-era Corvettes or not? The decision seems to be split among enthusiasts…there are those who love the early Mako Shark-styled cars but don’t like the tail end of C3 production in addition to the typical love it/hate it crowd, but if you need any inspiration, all you need to do is look at a racing C3 to get an idea of how a 1970s Corvette can be made badass. It involves flared wheel arches, monster rubber, side pipes and an engine under the hood that revs freely with that all-American bark known the world over. Cars like the Greenwood Corvette that went to Lemans in 1972 made a name for themselves purely on noise, with TRACO-modified big-blocks deafening the crowds. It wasn’t the most sophisticated car, but when it ran the Mulsanne Straight at 215 MPH, who gives a rat’s backside about sophistication? This was a hammer in a field of knives and it was just as effective.

Even by today’s standards, those racing C3s are potent, only limited by driver skill and tire compound. But the siren’s song that screams out from the sidepipes hasn’t changed over the years. These machines are still as raw and as wicked as the first fire, when the compression physically impacted your ribcage and the smell of hydrocarbons wafted into your nostrils. Disco Vette? If it’s like these cars, all day long.

Racing a prepped Corvette on a road course looks like about as much fun you can have with your clothes on!
