Morning Symphony: Ride Onboard A Ferrari 512 BB LM At Imola!

Could you easily identify this Ferrari if I hadn’t put it’s name into the title? Not many could. It doesn’t look like a Daytona or a Testarossa-based machine, and no Ferrari that was put on the street wore that nose or tail in any way, shape or form. Meet Ferrari’s “wing car” moment, the 512 BB LM. In 1978, Ferrari wanted to create their own in-house racing version after seeing the success of Luigi Chinetti’s North American Racing Team (NART)’s modified 365 GT4 BB. Originally, they widened the wheelwells, added a roof-mounted wing and attached the rear wing from a Ferrari Formula One car, while weighing in at just over 2,600 pounds. Unfortunately, the four cars entered in the 1978 24 Hours of LeMans didn’t complete the race.

For the next batch of LMs, the carburetors on the flat-12 were ditched for EFI and the bodywork was significantly re-worked by Pininfarina, which saw the flat nose with the large headlamps and the tail area of the car lengthened to the maximum allowed by FIA regulations. Between 1979 and 1982, the BB LM was able to place first in the GTX class and fifth overall at the 1981 24 Hours of LeMans.

You will be hopping on-board with Jèrèmy Lancksweert as he rips around Imola during the 2018 Imola Classic weekend. The surface is wet but that doesn’t stop him from dicing it up with a Porsche 935 K3 around the track. Few noises can grab your attention better than a Ferrari flat-12 howling at full tilt!
