Morning Symphony: Wake Up To Tom Strasser’s Highly-Strung Volkswagen Scirocco At The St. Anton Hill Climb!

Morning Symphony: Wake Up To Tom Strasser’s Highly-Strung Volkswagen Scirocco At The St. Anton Hill Climb!

The Volkswagen Scirocco was two bad ideas coming together to make something great: it was a sporty version of the Volkswagen Golf/Rabbit that was sold early to make sure there were no teething issues for the mainstream car, and the name alludes to the Sirocco wind, a hot wind from the Mediterranean Sea. It might have been forty years ahead of it’s time, but any illusion to Volkswagen and a bunch of  hot air is still pretty funny. There was nothing really funny about the Scirocco, however: it was a neat little sporty car that could be economic and handle competently…a great niche to fill in the automotive world, and back in the late 1970s, VW was cranking out light little cars like these like there was no tomorrow. They still have their fans across the world and you can find them in just about any guise, but most won’t be as dramatic as Tom Strasser’s first-gen Giugiaro-penned screamer. The only proof that this thing isn’t a slot car is the absence of the slot in the road…if that suspension is giving up anything, we are having trouble seeing where, exactly, it’s stressing. One can only imagine the kind of workout that Strasser is getting behind the wheel!
