Proper Homework: Watch Kids Get Racing Lessons In The Youth Hornet Class At Evergreen Speedway!

Back when Spanaway Speedway was still in existence, there really wasn’t a way that I was officially going to be allowed to drive the 1978 Pontiac Bonneville that we had built up to run. I was too young and as far as I knew, there were no provisions that would’ve allowed me to run. Lucky for me, I was a a tall kid and nobody looked twice so long as I kept my helmet on. I’d been driving for a couple years at that point and was fairly confident in my ability to keep the Poncho out of the wall or the infield, but nothing prepared me for PIT maneuvers disguised as “bump-pass” racing. Ah, well, live and learn. What would’ve been cool is a class like the Youth Hornet group that runs at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington. Yeah, I know, it’s a bunch of Honda, Acuras, and whatever other four-cylinder throwaway cars you can find but everybody on the track is between twelve and fifteen years old. The cars can’t have more than 210 horsepower and for the most part can’t really deviate from a factory setup. You get a cage, extra bracing, doors that are welded, chained or otherwise secured and with that, the kids are cut loose. And they can wheel very well…some of them will make you want to double-check to see if they are as old as they say they are!
