Historic class racing is a great way to watch older race cars make a good run on tracks. It brings back memories to those who grew up with those cars, and for those who didn’t, it’s a chance to see them in action. While a lot of the historic guys run as an exhibition, quite a few of them are very competitive and will let their car go balls-out. Those guys rule, but they play at a risk, because racing can showcase a car’s weaknesses.
Unfortunately for Ken Epsman, the driver of this IMSA-prepped Chevrolet Monza, he learned that lesson first-hand at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca. Epsman was running hard against a Porsche coming into Turn 4 when the driver’s rear wheel failed, breaking the spokes and causing the tire and rim to separate from the remainder of the wheel. The Monza spun out into the gravel and grazed the wall while the tire assembly bounced up and into the stands, luckily not hitting anyone. Epsman was uninjured and the Monza is repairable.
