Rallying On the Cheap: These Ugandan Drivers Race On Tight Budgets

Few people think of Africa as home to motorsports. Outside of the Paris-to-Dakar Rally and the Kyalami Circuit in South Africa, most people probably think the entire continent is barren of racing. However, Africa hosts an FIA-sanctioned rally championship, the aptly named African Rally Championship. Like most regional or national series, competitor do not have a manufacturer till from which to drag financial help. The money to race is all self-raised and, for the most part, the rally crew is at best the driver, co-driver, and whoever they can convince to help them out.

In addition to the big FIA series, most countries, like Uganda, have their own smaller national championships. While a few national and even ARC competitors can get their hands on the old Swiss Army knives of rallying—the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo and Subaru Impreza WRX—most improvise with whatever they can get their hands on cheaply. This CCTV Africa report from Uganda documents Ismail Otega, a mechanic who spends his spare time rallying what looks like a Toyota Vitz.

It’s a great look at racing abroad in a place where all racing is grassroots racing. And boy, does rallying draw a huge and enthusiastic crowd in Africa.
