Several Racing Classes Banned At Nurburgring After Fatal Accident Involving GT3 Nissan

One day after Jann Mardenborough’s Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 race car went airborne and crashed at the Flugpatz section of the Nurburgring Nordschliefe, killing one spectator and injuring at least two, word is coming down from the DMSB (the German motorsports association) that several classes of racing vehicles are being temporarily banned from the Nurburgring until the investigation into the accident has been completed and safety improvements have been made to the cars and/or the course.

DMSB General Secretary Christian Schacht said, in an official statement, “We cannot and will not go back to business as usual after an accident of this kind. We are all still deeply shocked and our thoughts are with the family of the victim. The security of the participants and especially the spectators must be a top priority.”

The ban will include the following classes: SP7, SP8, SP9, SP10, SP-PRO and SP-X, which includes GT3 and GT4 classes that race and numerous events at the Nurburgring, including the Nurburgring 24 Hours race, which is scheduled for May 14-17, 2015 . DMSB will investigate the accident to determine what changes need to be taken to prevent a similar accident from happening again, for both the cars and for the track. It’s not known when investigators from the DMSB or the racing team will be able to access the GT-R, which was seized and impounded by German police. Nissan has officially stated that they will fully comply with the investigation.
