Super Freak: This Flip-Up Bodied Volkswagen Is Amazing! Watch This 327-Powered Surprise Work The Autocross!

The theme for the Volkswagen that Urban Hillbilly Video caught at the Mid-America Street Rod Nationals has to be “Expect the unexpected”. Why do we say that? Well, it’s a clean Volkswagen Bug, but it’s front-engined, powered by a Chevrolet 327. Certainly didn’t expect that. It’s got a flip-up body, but you don’t expect a full interior tub that goes up when the body is raised, and you certainly don’t expect a car that appears to be inspired by a funny car to take to the autocross quite like this one does! Just soak in what this Bug represents: a huge commitment of time, talent and design. There’s a tube chassis, a narrowed Corvette independent rear suspension setup, and of course the amount of work that went into taking what is normally a tiny, four-cylinder throwback economy car and putting a hot-rodding spin on it that doesn’t take away any from the iconic nature of a Volkswagen. The fact that it’s driven hundreds of miles just for a chance to go play doesn’t hurt anything either. This is craftsmanship at it’s finest, and while I’ll never be a VW fan, I like this one.

  1. Chevy Hatin' Mad Geordie

Even tough its Chevy powered, this is almost the best VW Beetle I have ever seen. However it is beaten into second place by one I saw many years ago that had a Porsche 911 motor where the rear seats used to be and 911 suspension and brakes. It was known as the Super Beetle and there may have been plans to put it into limited production. If anyone out there has more information on it or some pictures please share it with us as it was an awesome beast indeed!
