Last week, we learned that Porsche had been working on a prototype model of the Cayman called the GT4 Clubsport. What was it about this latest version that got us paying attention? This is a factory-built Porsche that is specifically built to rally. The last time Porsche had that kind of intention in mind, the world got the 959, a Group B build that never really got the chance to come out and play, because the class was gone before the car debuted. Not that it was something to worry about…the 959’s status as an automotive icon is firmly cemented in place. But thirty years on, we’re looking at a factory-modded version of what is an entry-level new Porsche that is ready to rip up roadways and paths alike. It’s one thing to build an aggressive-looking car and to say that you’re thinking about it, but to actually have the stones to follow through? We are applauding right now.
Do keep in mind that at this stage, the car is still technically a concept, with Porsche saying that they are still analyzing the feedback and interest that they received during the car’s appearance at Rallye Deutchland. It’s kind of hard to imagine someone saying, “No, that’s too far,” when Pikes Peak driver Romain Dumas is whipping the car around like someone at Porsche dared him to break it. There isn’t anything too radical here, just additional underbody protection, energy-absorbing foam in the doors, and other minor modifications. This could easily be put to production either as a racer option or potentially as a sellable production car.
