This Vintage Sunbeam Tiger Club Racer Takes a Big Shunt But Races On

Tom Patton has made a name for himself in the club racing world for steadfastly campaigning his white Sunbeam Tiger in the SCCA for decades. Today, Patton’s old Rootes Group V8 roadster races in the SCCA’s GT2 class, where it looks a weird anachronism against late-model BMWs and Porsche 911s. If you thnink that means it’s not competitive, however, think again. Patton regularly mixes it up with higher-dollar cars and his long tally of victories includes a 1999 win at the SCCA Runoffs in GT2. Patton and his car are, to put it bluntly, totally badass. That makes this crash last year at the SCCA Majors race at Gingerman Raceway a bit more painful to watch.

Patton spins in Turn 2 while overtaking a Camaro on the outside, possibly running out of grip when his tires unfortunately ended up on the painted blend line. The pack of cars he had recently left behind while setting a GT lap record the previous circuit catch up in a hurry and one of the Fall-Line Motorsports BMWs hits him head-on. It was a hell of a hit and the Tiger was certainly a bit worse for the wear, but Patton rebuilt his Sunbeam—certainly not for the first time—and had it back at Road Atlanta earlier this year for another round of GT2 action.
