The Way It Should Have Been: This Ex-Group A Toyota Celica Rally Machine Makes The Regular Car Look Weak!

“Rally Rocket” brings up some correlating images for anyone who knows what rally racing is. Scenes like watching Colin McRae making a Subaru Impreza fly, or watching Tommi Mäkinen making a Mitsubishi Lancer do things that most cars wouldn’t survive are the reason why small, turbocharged all-wheel-drive cars became popular. When a young, impressionable kid learned that a Subaru could smoke a Camaro Z28 off the line and hold it off for quite some time, buying a Camaro seemed…well, almost pointless. That’s why WRXs and Evolutions have the following they do. But there were other cars competing for the prize of a WRC win, and the one that hooked me is the Toyota Celica ST165.

Here’s the truth…it’s not that I’m particularly attracted to the Celica, I’m not. It’s not that the Celica was the top-tier race car…it did well, but Toyota’s reputation in rally racing got tarnished after officials discovered an ingenious cheating device involving the turbocharger. No, the reason why the ST165 appeals to me in four-wheel-drive, damn-the-roads specification is simple: My mother had a Celica this generation, and I wanted so badly for her car, a standard GT hatchback with all of 115 horsepower, to be the rally monster I had seen on television. Look at the way Nicola Patuzzo wrings this version around, and tell me you wouldn’t feel the same?

The Celica retractable air restrictor was one of the most well-designed, well-engineered cheats in the history of racing. The FIA admitted they never would have found out about it if they weren’t tipped off to look for it.

Depending on where you are, an electric car might be powered by nuclear, wind, hydro (water), or natural gas — but coal is a definite possibility. Efficiency is about the same either way, being determined by Carnot\’s law, and about 30%. Weight of batteries will lower efficiency for an electric, but regenerative braking will make some up. Greenhouse emissions depend some on how you count water vapor. Gas will have more water vapor, since it has more hydrogen. Coal cost much less than gas, so if efficiency is considered in dollars (or other currency) per mile, electric costs less — at least after the car itself is paid for.
