Transmission Tech: How To Disassemble Your 4L80e Transmission

Since we are working on plans to install a fresh engine in the $200 Hauler, our 2000 Suburban low buck tow vehicle, we’ve been debating on what to do to the 4L80e that’s in it currently. We have a brand new TCI Maximizer Torque Converter that we were going to install, along with a Shift Boss transmission programmer, because the transmission’s stock converter is having trouble with the lockup clutch. But, just about the time we were planning the install, the engine started deciding it didn’t want to make power anymore and the trans got even less happy. SO… we figure it’s smart to get a new engine in this thing and refresh the trans at the same time. And at that point we’ll shove the new converter and Shift Boss in it so that we aren’t killing new parts by installing them with a trans that’s on it’s way out anyway.

But that led us to wondering what we should do with the 4L80e, and that means we might be building it ourselves. As much as we love the thought of making a phone call and having a new one delivered, we have already had some good trans support on other projects and don’t want to wear out or welcome with sponsors. Plus, we’ve never rebuilt one of these, so it’s sort of a challenge. Under our belts are Powerglides, TH350, 700r4, and TH400’s, but never a 4L80e. So in researching what we need to address as weak points in the 4L80e, we found some cool videos by Hiram Gutierrez that show how to rebuild a 4L80e.

First step…disassemble your 4L80e!

This video shows you how to do just that, so check it out.
