For off-road fans who love expedition vehicles, there is nothing that compares to the Turtle Expedition and their series of Ford trucks that were built for extreme conditions, long term off-roading, and full time living. In the pages of Off-Road and Four Wheeler magazines I read about this couple and their adventures traveling the globe. And keep in mind that this was long before lithium batteries and the capabilities of modern solar. So this photography and videography team had to make do with much less creature comforts than are available today. But their trucks were awesome, everyone loved the adventures, and they brought a whole new world of expedition off-roading to the world.
And if you were of the mindset to go experience your own expedition, companies like Earthroamer could build you a rig of your own with capabilities that range from mild to wild. But these bad boys are not cheap. Far from it. We’re talking big money and while the trucks are great, I sure as hell can’t afford one.
So what if you could build a cheaper version? Would it be worth doing?
Ian Johnson is doing just that, with the Towverlander project. This thing is going to be designed to haul the trail rig to the trails and give you a place to sleep and be comfortable. Maybe more.
Check it out.
