I’ve heard marvelous things about Baja California…the rugged desert scenery, the gorgeous Pacific coastline, the people, the food, and all of that. I’ve never been south of the border, though, so I have to live vicariously through others until I get the chance to go. You wouldn’t have to twist my arm for the food, the surf or the scenery at all, but that puts Baja California up to “vacation spot” on my list, and it’s in competition with Australia, Alaska, Hawaii and a return to Ireland. But there is the Baja 1000…the off-road meets rally spectacle that has been going strong since 1967. Fifty years of bashing through the desert scenery and keeping the shiny side up is enough of a draw to bring any true gearhead south of the border. Which brings us to the Hoonigan guys, who turned this year’s Baja 1000 into a full-fledged road trip, complete with a cheap but running Baja Bug tagging along for the ride as a chase vehicle. The views are gorgeous, the action is present and the Hoonigan brand of fun is present in spades.
