We’re huge fans of the Dakar Rally around here, and I started watching back in the day when the entire thing was first televised here in the United States. I remember drooling over the Kamaz trucks, the first Schlesser buggies, and the insane bastards riding those giant motorcycles. And when the American’s showed up and tried to win the thing in Trophy Trucks, I though “Hell yes, this is about to getting really really interesting.” And it has not disappointed. If you aren’t a fan of offroad racing, the Dakar may be the thing that will get you hooked.
It’s 13 stages, 5600 miles, and every type of terrain and challenge you can imagine. Hell, there have been years where civil unrest has required some serious detours. This is not an event for the faint of heart, but if you don’t want to try it then something might just be wrong with you.
Check out this cool video of testing that Robby Gordon did in the Arizona desert, and the second video below that is Part 1 of what Robby Gordon’s team went through in preparation for teh 2015 Dakar Rally. Oh, that prep started the day after the 2014 race by the way.
The only person that can beat Robby is himself, and he does that constantly. Hardest charger out there, but the machines can’t take all of the abuse. Will keep cheering him on though
