When you hear the name Parnelli Jones, you either think Indy or Baja depending on your background. Of course he drove just about everything else, but in Baja he will always be known as one of the pioneers. He described the Baja 1000 as an “all day plane crash” once and it has been repeated by some of the greats. His Bronco Big Oly, which was sponsored by Olympia Beer, was one of the most distinctive and cutting edge off-road trucks in history. If you don’t like Big Oly, your BangShift XL card is probably being voided as we speak!
This video shows Parnelli then, now, and in between and is a testament to the creativity, passion, and skill that resulted in one of the most amazing careers in Baja 1000 history. He starts off saying he wasn’t a good off-road racer. Well it’s a good thing, or else everyone else would have REALLY been screwed if he was worth a crap.
