I don’t know what it is about 24 Hours of Lemons events, but they always attract some really interesting daily drivers and other cool rides. I have now attended two Lemons events in my lifetime: The Thompson Motor Speedway “There Goes the Neighborhood” race earlier this year, and the New Hampshire Motor Speedway ‘Halloween Hooptiefest” that happened last weekend, and I’m batting 1000 for Trar sightings! Last time, it was this gnarly Buick Roadmaster 4×4, and this time, it’s this sweet, Bangshift-approved Chevy Vega hatchback 4×4! When a friend of mine also at the event sent me a picture of this thing, I immediately took off to the paddock to check it out, because it needed to be shared with the world.
So yeah, it’s a Vega Trar! It’s wearing period-correct turbine wheels, which are just perfect and complete the look. Also, note how high this thing sits. Those are RV camping trailers next to it, and it’s almost as tall.
Just like last time with the Roadmaster 4×4, the owner was nowhere to be found, so if you are out there, you rule!
Please excuse the mess, folks, but I see a full console in there, a manual brake bias controller on the side of that console, and is that a Hurst “His and Hers” Dual Gate shifter? I have one in my 1979 Trans Am, so I know they made aftermarket ones for some 70’s GM cars beyond the A-Bodies, but I have never seen one in a Vega. Cool!
Underneath, it had solid axles front and rear, so my guess is it’s probably an old K5 Blazer or K10 pickup that gave it’s chassis to this lovely creation. I couldn’t see the engine through the fenderwells, but it appeared to be a typical Small Block Chevy from underneath. And I’m 100% fine with that!
Oh, look: IT HAS A HITCH. And there was an empty car trailer nearby. Evidence suggests that this Chevy Vega TOWED a race car to the track! MIND. BLOWN.
I really don’t know what else to say about this beautiful piece of machinery. It is perfect in just about every way. It’s definitely high up on my Sweetest Trar of All Time list, right alongside the aforementioned Buick Roadmaster Trar I shared with you guys before. And if you know the owner, or you ARE the owner, leave us a comment below!
A guy in the area had a Vega wagon on a IH Scout frame. On 36’s.
I’m not usually a fan of Trar’s since most are abomination but this Vega is sweet. Then again I do like aby and all H-bodies.
Sweet!
The guy was pitted next to us at the Lemons race. It is a late 60’s two-door Jeep Cherokee chassis (he believes) and it’s powered by a 360ci Jeep/AMC engine. My understanding is that he bought it this way so he’s not completely sure what the donor chassis is.
Yep, looks like Wagoneer/Cherokee up front. Might have had to take a few inches out of the rails for wheelbase.
