Craigslist Find: 1964 REO Golden Comet Single-Axle, For The Truck Lover

The carved pumpkins have long gone, and the leftovers are slowly being consumed from the Thanksgiving feast. Now it’s time to focus on Christmas presents, regardless of how much earlier the stores want you to believe is reasonable. It’s been a good year at BangShift, with lots of live feeds, plenty of pictures, tons of video, and more frequent-flyer miles than Brian would probably like to admit. So, while the stores turn into a kind of MMA-meets-Gladiator scene with coupons, we decided to keep on doing what we do best here: find some of the most interesting automotive things to showcase for you.

Now, in the case of this 1964 REO Golden Comet, it should come as no surprise as to who I thought of first in this season of giving. Look at it…even I want it and I’m not that into old trucks. The story on the truck is that it’s had the same owner for many years who used it around his farm and cared for it well, and it looks the part. The engine is a gas-powered “rebuilt slant six”, which is all of the information I can find out about it, hooked to a five-speed with a splitter.

reo3Inside the cab it’s as spartan as can be. This isn’t padded down in the least. There isn’t even a vinyl floor mat…just pedals, gauges, shifter and seats. You want it warmer? Get the air from under hood. You want it colder? Roll down a window. This is the kind of old-school heavy-duty truck that is endearing: it’s completely no-BS about what it does, and it will do it well so long as it’s taken care of.

The REO is for sale because it’s loving owner recently passed on. For $13,400, you would be picking up a truck that is showing just over 73,000 miles on the odometer, is dead-nuts simple, and can work like none-other. Remember, this is the same company that gave the U.S. Army the M35…yes, REO designed the Deuce and a Half truck for the military.
