No Cheese With This Whine: The Blower On This Top Diesel Engine Sounds Extra Nasty

Not all superchargers are created equal and when you’ve got your blower sitting atop a diesel drag-racing engine, you really ought to make sure that it sounds capable of reversing the earth’s rotation. Since the blower in question perches on a 427 cubic-inch diesel V8 built by Banks Power, it might actually be capable of making the sun rise in the west. This engine has been around the block a few times, running in twin-turbo configuration for years before being converted to run supercharged a couple years ago. Now, the supercharger sounds extra-nasty, like Hades’ air-raid siren.

The plan, as outlined in the video’s description, is to tune the whole setup with the supercharger and the zoomie-style exhaust to get the most from that, then slap a turbo on each cylinder bank—This is Gale Banks’ creation, after all—to run down the current NHDRA Top Diesel record of 6.466 @ 225.30 mph set by Jared Jones at Lucas Oil Dragway in June 2014. Banks hopes to have the Sidewinder testing within a few weeks using the new engine setup and we’re pretty dang excited about the sound of that symphony from the extra-filthy supercharger whine harmonizing with a pair of big ol’ turbos. A chamber quartet, this ain’t.
