WTF Kind Of Transmission Cooler Installation Is This? Holy Hell This Is Wrong

I can’t show you the vehicle that this trans cooler is installed in, but you can tell that it is a 1968-1972 C10. I came across it while looking for a new family truckster tow rig. I sent the seller a message asking for more photos than the ones in the ad on Craigslist and that’s when I saw it. I shared it with Crosby who’s response was WTF!?! It was followed up by a conversation where we laughed like little girls. What is most interesting to me is…well actually there are several interesting things.

The radiator looks like a pretty stout tig welded piece that has nice dual electric fans and the whole getup. And the aluminum trans cooler looks pretty nice too actually! But the way that it is mounted is absolutely amazing for all the wrong reasons. Lets blow the hottest air possible across the trans cooler after it all goes through the radiator. And lets… oh hell, I can’t even talk about it anymore.

But I would REALLY REALLY REALLY like your opinions, comments, etc. Because they will make me laugh.

Oh, and you are welcome. Yeah, this made you laugh and it made you feel good about some of the stuff you have done on your projects. Yeah, I know. You are welcome.

What\’s with the thermostat housing orientation?… The alternator pulley alignment looks less than stellar also… What else is \”just good enough\”? Yikes!!

My first thought was that thing next to the master cylinder was nylon hard line.

And is that stuff with the white braid a PCV line? That’s not rated for underhood temperatures, and he’s using it both for hot transmission fluid and his fuel line. YIKES!

The first thing that jumped out at me after the questionable transmission cooler placement was how he was using a separate mechanical fan after his electric fans, but the more I look at that engine compartment, the scarier it gets.

The wire wrapped around a small bolt is a nice touch for throttle linkage. Looks like maybe an extension cord run from the firewall to the headlights and nothing says speed like white rubber hose for fuel lines.

Can’t tell if the fan on the water pump is working with or against the electric fans. Should it even be on there at all? Probably not.

My recommendation: flip the mechanical fan around so it pushes air toward the trans cooler. Then…electric fans pulling…mech fan pushing…you’ll have a tornado of vortexy swirling air flow around the trans cooler.

At that point you could pretty much tow a battleship up a mountain and the trans would yawn.

Flipping a fan around will NOT reverse air flow. Practically everybody makes that erroneous conclusion. Please don’t shoot the messenger.

Who ever did the Radiator & Electric Fan work did NOT do anything else.
The Mechanical fan has bent blades. It is not doing much other then robbing power and making noise..

The trans-cooler appears to have a Mr.Gasket clear fuel filter at the top port.
The trans cooler other then surface area cooling down to radiator temps is doing nothing more. It has more volume then a Factory cooler in radiator tank and more surface area yet will be at the same temp or higher. As it has no water cooling, just hot air.

The rest of the under hood looks like it was done by someone that has a No Fork family tree.

I thing you’re getting to excited over nothing. Most factory trans coolers are inside the radiator, so how cool than they make the fluid? Ya there is a lot of hack going on under that hood but I’m not worried about the trans temp in this odd configuration.

Actually, the thermostat housing is a bit of smart engineering. He reversed it so the hose would run in the correct direction towards the radiator. What else:
    – The right angle bung welded to the top of the valve cover with nothing connected to it.
    – The spark plug cable making a 180 degree reverse bend coming out of the boot and laying across the exhaust manifold.
    – The near-vertically mounted radiator cap.
