In Russia, vehicle accidents aren’t an unfortunate meeting of circumstances so much as a thinly-veiled national pastime. We’ve showcased some dash cam footage that has shown flying trucks, cars trying to run through traffic, all manner of losing control, and even some lucky pedestrians who somehow managed to not become entangled in a Lada sandwich. And that’s before you factor in the weather or the liquor. But while intoxicated driving and hazardous conditions are certainly nothing to trifle with, distracted driving can be the most dangerous, especially when the distraction appeals to mankind’s baser instincts.A Russian advertising firm took thirty billboard advertising trucks and placed a photo of bare breasts with the caption “They Attract” and a phone number on the sides. The goal was to encourage businesses in the Moscow area to use their trucks for mobile advertising. What ended up occurring probably could have used Benny Hill music playing in the background, because over the course of one day, 517 traffic accidents were caused due to distracted driving. I guess it’s hard to concentrate when two melons on the back of a lorry cross your eyesight. Roughly, that’s a wreck caused by the Wonder Twins every 2.8 minutes of the day. Wowzers.
Authorities weren’t the least bit amused and impounded all thirty trucks, vowing only to release them once the advertisements were peeled off. At least the company, Sarafan Advertising Agency, has voluntarily offered to cover the cost of repairs to any of the “victims” whose damages are greater than their insurance payouts. Though, I wonder how many of the drivers would rather just pay the costs out of pocket instead of trying to figure out a PC way of writing down what exactly happened at that intersection.
