The Aeromotive, RoushYates, 2010 Mustang Pro Mod car is on track for it’s first weekend of competition on The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. And while the much anticipated RoushYates 500 cubic inch twin turbo Ford is not yet under the hood for this weekend’s NHRA Las Vegas Nationals, we are told it is currently being tested. In the meantime, the tried and true twin turbo Mod motor combo that Steve Matusek and the Aeromotive team have run for several years is under the hood for initial testing in NHRA’s Competition Eliminator Category. We spoke to Steve after his first full pass in the car, where it ran a 6.89 at 204 mph, and he said it went straight as an arrow but was pig rich. Sounds like the Mustang is in need of more boost, and less fuel. Throw some timing at it too Steve. Turbo motors like that a lot. At least for a little while.
Aeromotive’s new Mustang was built by Larry Larson’s Larson Racecars in Oak Grove Missouri, and was built for the new 500 cubic inch RoushYates turbo motor in preparation for a full assault on the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Series in 2011. With the big motor comes big power numbers, and expectations are in the 3000 horsepower plus range. The Mustang is equipped with a 3 speed, air shifted, planetary transmission that should put a big load on the big motor and turbos which is exactly what they like. In comparison, Aeromotive’s previous Mustang was equipped with a 5 speed trans to keep the little motor in its powerband. After only two 500 foot hits in testing late last week, the team told us that getting the little Mod Motor to like the 3 speed trans was going to mean getting really agressive leaving on big boost.
This weekends NHRA Las Vegas Nationals, and next weekends NHRA Division 7 event are the first outtings for the new car, and Team Aeromotive is hoping for good outings. If all goes well, we hope to see them run the car at NHRA’s Automobile Club of Southern California Nationals in Pomona November 11-14, and then the PSCA Street Car Supernationals in Las Vegas November 18-21.
Team Aeromotive will check in with us tomorrow after they make another run with the car and we’ll keep you posted as to how it’s running.
