Lohnes and I are up in Maine, living the life and freezing our arses off at the Red Bull Frozen Rush event, and we aren’t alone up here either. Racers, representatives, a bunch of tire dealers, writers and photographers have all descended on the small town of Newry to cover the fun, and one of the more prominent individuals floating around is Larry Chen. I’ve known Chen by his work for Hot Rod Magazine and Speedhunters, and if I ever get a big head about a decent shot I’ve ever taken, all I need to do is to look at Larry’s work to know that I’m still an amateur. That’s not a crack at my skills…it’s just that Chen is that good. Look at the shot of that Trans Am: any black and gold Pontiac can look good, but Larry can work natural light and his equipment to make a poster-worthy shot that brings out the menace and beauty of the car. If I sound like a fanboy about this, I apologize, but we all have to have a goal to achieve and if I can shoot half as well as Chen does, I’m good. He recently put up his “best of 2015” list up on Speedhunters, and no matter the car, you have to admit that if he takes a photo of it, he can make it look damn good.
