Back To The Drawing Board: AeroMobile Prototype Flying Car Crashes In Slovakia

Back To The Drawing Board: AeroMobile Prototype Flying Car Crashes In Slovakia

(Pictures: allthingsaero.com) There is a lot to be concerned about when it comes to the subject of a flying car. Safety, though, must be paramount and the focus of everything that is done, from initial design to testing and flying. The comparison is old, but it’s very true: if your car breaks down you coast to the side of the road. If your flying car breaks down…well…gravity is a cruel bitch. And unfortunately for AeroMobile inventor and designer Stephan Klien, that lesson was reinforced when the AeroMobile concept vehicle entered into a uncontrollable downward spin at about 700ft above ground in West Slovakia, forcing Klien to use the airframe’s emergency parachute. Klien suffered only minor injuries and walked away from the crash, though he was admitted to the hospital later on. The AeroMobile, on the other hand, appears to have stuffed itself face-first into the ground before coming to rest in a field.

Anybody still certain that the flying car is the way of the future?

Three small lessons from nature, evolved through millennia : Things that fly well are awkward on the ground. Things that are fast, lithe on the ground don’t fly. You can get lots of attention for yourself by trying bizarre things that in the end advance no other cause.

A flying car is neither fully one or the other. It’s always been a bad idea but that won’t stop people from trying. I’m glad there were no major injuries.

Can’t wait until 3 blue-hairs come to a three-way intersection in their flying cars, somewhere over Florida…….
