BangShift Has A New Shop! What Should We Call It? What Should We Put In It? Help Us Decide!

BangShift Has A New Shop! What Should We Call It? What Should We Put In It? Help Us Decide!

For years I have cussed all of you that have nice shops at home, with all your toys and tools in them, because I’ve been stuck in a two car garage with two cars, another car worth of parts, and all kinds of normal garage crap. In order to get anything done I have to set aside an hour just to get things moved around to even be able to start working and then once I am done with the work have to spend another hour cleaning up. That makes it real hard to get anything done on my projects. But…I have persevered! Thanks to the new TV show gig I have just enough money each month to budget for shop space of my own! This is a triple bonus because not only do I get the shop space, but Daphne will get to park in the garage for the first time ever, and the BangShift accountant won’t bitch at me about spending money we shouldn’t!

BangShift Chad's New Shop 001

So now, this place is home to my projects, and will also be the home of BangShift tech stories, videos, and other projects here on the West Coast. My question to you, fellow BangShifters, is how should we set this place up? And what the hell should we call it? Should it be the BangShift Bat Cave? BangShift Tech Center? Help us think of something BangShifty.

Here are the specs on this place. It’s 1167 square feet, which is only about a tenth of what I would love to have, but is in the Chad budget right now and so that’s what we’ve got. The office is small, as you’ll see in the drawings below, which is good because I would rather have all shop space anyway. There is room for two, or three in a pinch, cars at the back, while one lives on the lift getting worked on. For now, three cars is my plan at one time in the place.

Shop 2D Layout

I’ve acquired a new to me Mac Tools tool box, a bitchin old air compressor, a 4 post lift, and a 1955 GE Refrigerator that I got from the original owner. Other than that it’s a big white blank canvas that is ready for my workbenches, a new welding table I want to build, and shelving that I have a line on.

Shop 3D Layout 2 Shop 3D Layout

I’ll be bringing you along on the entire outfitting of the shop, including what tools we have and will use, a welding table project, running air lines and extra electrical, custom built tools and equipment, and more. Tell us what you want to see me make here. Tell us what you would put on your want list of tools and equipment?

In the photos you see that the Camaro and Nova are already in the shop, and that the Nova is more accessible. That’s because we’re working with Chris Alston’s Chassisworks on the parts list to redo the backhalf to convert the car to a 4-link, redo the tinwork and tubs, wiring, plumbing, and much more. What will power it? We’re not sure yet, but a big turbo or two is calling my name right now. We’ll see.

BangShift Chad's New Shop 002

Anyway, give us suggestions for things to do in the shop, how to set it up, what to call it, etc. I want your input ladies and gentleman. It’s a blank canvas right now, but I’m going to start moving things in ASAP, so now is the time to make decisions.

That’s what I was thinking too. I think it’s great, it sounds like a place where pornos are made.

    1. That looks like an overhead garage door as opposed to a roll-up. Check your overhead clearance and ability to hang lights there before you put the lift in front of that door and make it a primary work area.
    2. Need stairs to the storage area over the office.
    3. Don’t forget to build a tire rack.

Congratulations on acquiring your new “digs”!

It should be a tax write-off when used as a studio for upcoming (?) PowerShift productions.

Does the name “The BangShift Bay” fit?

If you go with fluorescent lighting, make sure the ballasts are the electronic ones. There’s an opportunity to save a few shekels.

That old-a** ‘fridge is gonna cost you an arm and a leg to operate 24/7. Upgrade to a newer energy-efficient one when you can.

When I’m fabbin’, I’ve found a combo belt/disc sander to be so useful.

Fire extinguishers on every wall, just in case, would be good.

Wanna make SWC happy? Take that funny car body from your back yard and mount it on the back wall or suspend it from the ceiling!

Resist sub-letting space or your friends’ “temporary” storage.

Convince the kids a shop vac can be fun to use.

Snatch the BBC from the Crusher Camaro and stick it in the Nova.

Hey, Chad, are those [removable] “can’t crash in here” bollards just inside the door?

    1. Chad Reynolds Post author

Yes they are C1. 24 inches deep in concrete, reinforced, and locked. I want my stuff to stay my stuff.

    2. NASBackyard

Shifthole is easy but your going to just end up calling it the shop. What ever you do, don’t store anything on the floor outside of immediate projects, or you will be buried in no time. I see a shelf running around the parimeter suspended from the ceiling for the stuff you will have to store.3 ft down from the ceiling and 2 ft out.. That’s what I have and it holds a set of bucket seats or the equivilant size item, that is about a heavy of an item you want up there. All you will need is some 3/8″ all thread, some 2″ angle iron or aluminum and some plywood I found short pieces of all thread and used long nuts to connect it.with angle brackets. fasten it to the ceiling joists The aluminum angle I had pack ratted for over 25 years (it was easy to store. And the wood I salvaged .Old pallet racks are plentiful and another way to store stuff like engines transmissions and rearend, again, only if its for a project. Does any outside area come with iit? If you can scrounge up some materials I’ll show up down there one weekend when I’m taking the 61 Olds on a test drive and help you put it up. Also, another must have is check out Big lots or Harbor Freight and buy as many 39.95 a pr car dollies that you can afford. Those things have many uses. I have almost everything in my shop on rollers. There great for engines too.

  4. William Wilson

    BangShop is my name choice.

Apparently other thing the same way faster then me.

  5. NICK LEONE

Buy some pallet racking used for storage above the two cars in the back and anywhere else you can fit it.
I bought 24 ft long setup with shelves for under $400 used locally.
The set up is 12 ft high and 48inches deep with plywood shelves.
My first shelf is 6ft high and I use the space under for stuff i use frequently.

    Nick

    1. Chad Reynolds Post author

I hear you Nick, but the one nice thing about my lift is that it has casters so it can roll around, even with a car on it.

  6. loren

The Shifter Hole, is what I’d choose.

First get small signs saying “What moves in must someday move out”, and “$1k/month for 5 yrs is sixty-thousand dollars”, just to remind yourself. Now that I’ve ruined all the fun…

You need a big fat heavy work table, a used drill press, a plasma cutter to go along with your welder, and nothing major that looks like it’s from Harbor Freight. So, good score with the tool boxes. Whatever you can buy at a swap meet, big and small, that got handed down from industry such as aerospace is good and part of the fun.

    1. Chad Reynolds Post author

One of the tech stories I’m doing is about building a welding table/heavy work table. I have built several and have some really really cool tips and tricks that make them a must have in the shop.

A drill press is on the list, although my next door neighbor has a full machine shop with Bridgeport and all. He rules and I’ve already started using his tools. LOL

I want a Plasma cutter bad. I have two really good welders already, so I need the plasma now.

  7. 440 6pac

Unless you really need it removing the office will give you more work space. But they are handy at time. I keep all my records for my cars in mine.
As for as a name, Chad’s Cave might work. I call mine The Barn because it’s a converted barn.

    1. Chad Reynolds Post author

I would love to remove the office, but the landlord will frown on it since I am on a 1 year lease to start.

I’m going to put it to good use for storage and such like you said.

  8. paul

The best lighting possible and a suitable welder. Phones prohibit getting any work done. Bathroom air freshener and TP. The brokeback Burrito palace.

    1. Chad Reynolds Post author

Welders are handled. I own two very nice Millers. A Synchrowave 250 Tig and Millermatic 180 Mig get all the welding done anyone can handle. I’m a welder. I started when i was 6.

  9. b3m

bangshift garage. Very complicated, sophisticated imagination.. made that up myself.

everyhting else sounds like a porn movie title.

  10. VRMN8R

Consider a 4’x8′ welding table on wheels with a jacking system …… a screw set-up , so you can pick the wheels up slightly to lock the table in place , so that it wont shift while you’re working ….. I recommend a table top of 1/2″ thick ….. How about ” Ratz Nest ” for a name ….???

    1. Chad Reynolds Post author

I like Ratz Nest. Good idea.

I’m on the welding table in a big way. I have designed and built many. 4×8 is a little big for the space, so I’m probably going 3×6. We’ll see.

I have a great way to roll it around, and yet let is sit on the ground when “parked”. Tons of great modular features to it too. I’ll be doing a complete tech story with video on the build of that sucker. Everyone will want one.

  11. SoCalCamaro

Call it The Money Pit….it is amazing how quickly the space starts filling up when you drop a few cars in there…welcome to the neighborhood!

  12. BLD

Nice place . If you don’t mind me asking, what kind of lift are you putting in ? I am looking for one like that. Many brands out there. How tall is that ceiling ?
You are gonna love it….SWC will get to hate it !!!

    1. Chad Reynolds Post author

No, SWC pushed me to get it. She is actually going to get to park in the garage for the first time in 9 years. She’s thrilled!

The lift is a generic version of a Backyard buddy. The price was super right, and it will work fine for what I’m doing. Ceiling is 12 feet.

  13. Barnkin

How about “Home” cause whan SWC gets tired of you spending all your time there, thats where you will be living.

  14. Johnnyg

I don’t care what you name it but If u don’t do an Aussie style burnout competition their then you are doing it wrong!!!!

    1. Chad Reynolds Post author

I would LOVE to Johnnyg, but the landlord will flip out I am sure. We’ll see what we can come up with though. Maybe behind one of the other buildings and blame it on one of the other tenants!

  15. CharlesW

I will share with you all what i texted chad … you should name it Church of Higher Power so he could get a tax break then he responded its a good idea cause hes a ordained minister LOL

  16. Threedoor

Several portable welding screens in frames so as to keep spatter off the glass and arc burns from the lolly gaggers

    1. Chad Reynolds Post author

This is a great idea, and one I’ve already been looking into. The space is great, but not “big” so I want to protect the only two cars I have that are painted.

  17. crazy canuck

hmmm emptyspace better fill it up fast with your stuff . does a certain Hot Rod guy know about this location yet ?

    1. Chad Reynolds Post author

He does, and he’s jealous. Luckily it’s too far from his house to warrant any “strays” showing up. Plus, as of this evening it’s got two cars, and almost all my stuff in it in a giant pile.

I get shelving tomorrow and will start putting things away.

The big Mac toolbox comes home to the shop on Sunday so then it will be a tool organizing party. Woot woot!

      1. Scott Liggett

It’s amazing how fast it will fill up. Getting organized and staying that way is the key. It is something you will have to consistently keep up on. My little work bench fills up with tools and crap constantly and I have to constantly put stuff away and keep things neat and clean. You almost have to be anal about it.

Have fun with your new gearhead cave. Hopefully, you find more time to work on all your junk.

  18. Larry1320

A- Enclose Air Compressor to deaden sound — vent to outside.
B- Run 110 around all the walls, extension cords suck. 220 plug located closest to your welding table also place one inside the roll-up door ( quick jobs outside instead of moving things around)

    Agree with Bang-Shop

  19. Robert

Find a really good graffiti/mural artist and let him loose on those walls in trade for exposure on the website.

    1. Chad Reynolds Post author

You are a smart man Robert. I’ve also thought of this and have talked to a guy that is a buddy of Troy Ladd over at Hollywood Hot Rods. I am working on making this happen so that we have a giant BangShift mural of some kind up on the wall. And sponsor banners of course!

  20. G_Krejci

Call it the Knuckle Bangers Inn, as far as tools thats up to the crew and what ya build in the space. But as an Artist / Designer and Gear-Head, I love the wall art that fill the walls of old school shops which would give your space a unique feel. Fill it with signs, logos, stickers, anything that makes it feel like a gear heads paradise. Then build a wicked gasser or drag car to race against Roadkill and HotRod magazine.

    -Krejci

    1. Chad Reynolds Post author

I like how you think G.

And as far as building something to kick ass on the Roadkill crew, that’s what the Nova is going to be. A real ass kicker.

Stay tuned for a ton of stuff that is going to change on that car. A ton.

  21. jbedit

Since everything you guys see and write about is EPIC, there is really no other choice to call it but The Epic Lounge.

  22. rodney

Peytons place!..LOL or Reynolds Rap…ummm no that sounds like a talk show…how about Car Junkies as a nod to the early days…well here’s a list …Alchemy..Forged….Steel…Fuel…Process…Beaker…

I have had my shop in Chatsworth CA. for over 15 years, and it will never be perfect, and you know your needs better than anyone. That being said, as I saw someone else post as well, the last thing I would do is put the lift in the main doorway. It will bottleneck everything. I would put it in the back as close as you can to the bathroom. That way it is easy to get to, and cars on it or under it will not be in the way. I would then put a work bench (stainless top) along the back wall towards the corner with a tool box next to it, as you will be taking parts that may be oily off the car on the lift and need tools to do that and a place to put them. Per your diagram you should be able to fit a car in the corner and work on it too. While you still can, epoxy the floor. At least in what you call your clean area. Put your grinder, drill press, big vise (a must) and anything that will be dirty in one end or corner of the shop. I would go with behind the office in that corner. And sheet it with stainless. Easy to clean. You will need shelving. I use 18″ X 48″ and have 5 units, 7 feet tall and it’s not enough. Think about it. Hardware (takes one whole unit in my shop), spare parts for multiple cars, ice chests, chairs, fluids, fittings, electrical, paints , gaskets, and your helmets and driving suits. It fills up fast brother. What about floor jacks and jack stands, shop vac, propane tanks for the BBQ, gas cans, spare wheels and tires, and engines tend to stack up. The heavy duty plastic 12 gallon totes they sell at Lowes are great to have a dozen of and fit well on the bottom of the shelving units. Have fun with the new place and I would call it ( The Toy Box )

    1. Chad Reynolds Post author

If I put the lift anywhere else it becomes even more of a bottleneck because then I have to have a non running car in the entry area and that means moving stuff in and out all by myself becomes a problem. The lift is the easiest thing to move because it has casters, or can just be lifted up and driven under with a car. We’ll see once stuff is in there and moved around, but that’s my thought process at this point.

      1. Gary

I do like “Bang Bunker”, Hope you are enjoying the new place, and let me know when the grand opening is! Look up my little hole in the wall. FB – Chaos Racing. I’m right behind Nelson Racing.

    1. NASBackyard

If you give me an email ‘llI send you a dozen pics of what I’ve done. 90% of it was free, scrounged, a lot of it came from my brother who use to dumpster dive a metal cabinet company. I’ve got my mess concentrated to just on corner at this time, not all over the shop., I dont have Outlook on my computer so it doesn’t show your actual email.

    BANGSHIFT BATTLEBOX

Since it’s rental space and needs to be flexible – 2 things:

1.pallet racks – they come in all shapes and sizes, can be put up and taken down in a couple hours with a couple guys, hold tons of stuff and can be used not only for storage but also the base of the all important along the wall work bench.

    2. CASTERS – put everything (including that bitchin welding table you’re about to build) on wheels! trailer tongue jacks with wheels on the bottom are great for benches you want to be able to move, but then position, and then not move while you beat the living hell out of some part in the vice…

  25. John

Plasma – I had an older miller – it broke – not worth fixing – I got a new one on ebay shipped to my door – for under $400, works great! Hard to argue at 1/4 the price of a blue, red or yellow one!

    It has several meanings:
    Bearded ones shop
    Bangshift 1
Bis short for business (where the business gets done)

  27. Sweeney, your local Norton abrasives guy

Looks like you could use an abrasive product sponsor, yeah? Depressed center grinding wheels, cut-offs, flap discs, belts? Email me if you could use a donation to the new digs…

  28. Steve Bolin

    Shop name# Piston Slap
I would like to see the extra stuff you run off your compressor. I just bought my first big 60 gallon, northern tool puma, but that’s all I could afford. what’s sufficient enough to paint with? Should I route hard lines all over my shop(garage) to plug into?
Awesome lift! I would love to get one of those one day. Congrats guys, you’ve earned it.

  29. Michelle

Bangorama. Need some fun car stuff (like banners or car pieces- like race hood/door).

  30. SST5244

Lights, lights and more lights. No matter how many you put up it’s always in a shadow where you want to see. So, the more the better.

    1. Chad Reynolds Post author

I’ve already put some up, but I know I’m going to need more. I’m looking for some used stuff so I can make it cheap. LOL

  31. Red Hot 71

Why not call it “The Palace”. I’m sure you feel like a king right now. All hail to King Chad. Hail Chad, hail Chad, hail Chad.

  32. Bill

X2 on pallet racks to double or triple your storage space. Everything on wheels as best as possible. Costco bread racks are cheap and easy for mid size parts.

I think the movable lift up front is right, all the better for pressure washing the underside of the new treasure by rolling it outside. Mobile but heavy fabrication tables from industrial sales we have three of them. We had to move our entire setup almost two years ago and wheeled stuff and my open trailer made it possible. Beer fridge, microwave and tunes are also essential, mezzanine for old sofa and tv can be good two. We have four poker tables for um entertaining.
