BangShift Question Of The Day: Is Your Significant Other As Automotive Obsessed As You Are?

BangShift Question Of The Day: Is Your Significant Other As Automotive Obsessed As You Are?

Today’s BangShift Question Of The Day came to me this morning at work after finishing a conversation via text message with my wife about modifications that she wants to make to her Jeep Wrangler this Spring, which among other things includes installing a small lift and bigger tires. Smack dab in the middle of the conversation, it hit me: “Wait, my wife is talking to me about cars, and she’s excited about it! When did this happen?

Don’t get me wrong, she’s always been supportive of my hobby, which can be a bit of a time commitment once the weather is nice and I’m spending several hours each weekend doing “car stuff”, whether it’s wrenching in the garage or shooting photos for BangShift, but her eyes typically glaze over about five minutes into any in-depth conversation about the finer points of fuel injector pulse width calculations. Women, right?

Aside from being a passenger in one of my cars, I’m pretty stoked that she’s finally excited about her own vehicle and wants to modify it. She even wants to learn how to work on it, which is beyond awesome. While I wouldn’t yet consider her obsessed like I am in regards to all things BangShifty, I’d say this is a good start for sure. Of course, this means that I’ll probably need a bigger garage and she’ll probably want her own set of tools; Hmm…

For sure…She had her two muscle cars before I met her…65 Dodge & 69 Mustang GT. We are currently making the GT into a street/strip car because she wants to “race more”. She is currently leading the charge for buying a new tow vehicle for my race car so we can “travel more”. And just this morning she sent me an email alerting me that Bruce Larson’s DragonSnake Cobra is heading back to auction…and bumming out that we can’t afford it. Obsessed? Yup.

No way. She tolerates my car magazines being left around, her mini van being parked outside while my 2 projects take up garage space and she sleeps while I watch car programs like “Fast n Loud” or “Top Gear”. Toleration = acceptance of me

You bet she is. She been turning wrenches with me since before we were married 45 years ago. She’s even built herself a couple of cars with the only help from me being jobs that need 2 people..

My wife can drive a stick shift and start a car with a chokeless carburetor, but doesn’t have much interest in wrenching or modifications. However, buying a ’72 Chevy pickup was her idea, and she’s driven it about as much as me.

Funny thing is … when we first started dating she didn’t think she was . But after a few spins in my then car .. a couple of F1 .. a WRC rally and a bunch of car shows [ Exotic / Hot Rod and Classic ] … well …. she is now . Whats a kick after 20 years of marriage is when she can identify a car more times than not by what movie or TV show the car was in .e.g Emma Peels Lotus Elan .. Robert Redford’s 911 in ” DownHill Racer “… ” Get Smart’s ” Sunbeam Tiger .. the” Saints ” Volvo P1800 .. the Bristol in ” An Education ” .. etc

But then again … we’ve got a photo on the wall of her grandfather participating in the 1919 Pikes Peak Hillclimb .. so in truth … the lady’s had it in her genes all along . It just took marrying a GearHead to bring it all out

Absolutely! Buggin me to get our ’56 Chev done. Encouraged me to buy a ’70 Vette. Then, she wanted a new SS Camaro, WHICH SHE GOT!

    I HATE her! ….NOT!

My wife puts up with the parts extravaganza in our house, large boxes for each project filled to the brim taking up all our closet. She flat out loves to go drag racing(even though that has come to stand still for now). She has her ’79 Malibu Wagon that I work on, but she has a lot on her plate raising our 3 grand kids, but she is always supportive. When I went and bought a 8500GVW ’85 Chevy C20 w/383 she though it was the coolest P/U tow rig ever. I love her to pieces!!!

I’m single, but in 95 my girlfriend said I should sell my GTO because it was not a practical family car. I was single very soon after!

That would cause an imbalance in the force . . .

But she can drive vehicles with manual transmissions (which puts her ahead of about 90% of the ladies these days)

    In a sense…..yes.
We’ve been together since high school ….mid ’60’s……….and she’s been involved in all my car endeavors.
We dated in a ’55 Chevy and she’s all about my current ’55 Chevy……lots of memories.

The exact same thing as the author described happened to me too. She would always love to listen to me explain, and I would like to listen to what she picked up (she’s a good learner!), and it just really made any time we spent together feel really quality because we could both talk about anything we pleased and have the other want to understand it. Now she’s on that she needs her own sports car, her halo being an R8, but more realistically looking at S5s, S4s, etc. Personally I’d love an R8 as well, but am trying to gauge the feasibility of building a F5R Daytona Coupe or a really well done Mk. 4 Cobra.

My Mrs is just as hooked on drag racing as i am,i’m building my first slingshot and she has just bought a classic to restore for a push car,she lets me get away with cancelling plans to work on the car, hell i was ment to take her to the movies and a meal after but i went to go collect my fuel mask instead, she didn’t mind,i love her lots.

Since this seems to be directed towards the mostly male population on here, I’ll go ahead and say, yes, I’m automotive obsessed, but in no way as much as my husband (Remy-Z/Bryan McTaggart). I grew up around drag racing and spent a lot of time with my uncles while they worked on their cars, so the smell of high octane fuel and burning rubber make me happy. I know enough to fix my 1980 Mustang (first car) and even took welding just so I’d know how. My trump card? Bryan and I met at SEMA…then we planned our wedding around it and honeymooned at SEMA. All because of BangShift…

Been with my better half for almost 14 years. I always thought my babbling was in one ear out the other, until a couple years back. She comes to me and said “my car has a high idle that stumbles and my mpg is down, I think my iac is stuck” … I feel in love all over again

  15. tigeraid

Not even remotely. As much as I try to make her.

She does like watching short track racing though, so that helps.
