BangShift Question Of The Day: What Engine Do You Secretly Want, But Wouldn’t Tell Your Buddies About?

BangShift Question Of The Day: What Engine Do You Secretly Want, But Wouldn’t Tell Your Buddies About?

After spending the weekend watching cool Nostalgia Drag Cars running down the famed 1320 at Beech Bend Raceway, and talking about Olds Powered Slingshot Dragsters, Gassers, Boats, and More, it became apparent that choosing the uncommon or less common powerplant may make you weird, but it also might make you super cool. After all, the difference between being a trendsetter and being the guy that likes strange stuff is just how you present it. Ask Steve Magnante. So since the Oldsmobile powered race cars were my inspiration, I thought what better BangShift Question of the Day than one that asks what engine you “secretly” want or think is cool, but may be afraid to admit to your Big Block buddies.

So what is it? Do you long to hammer a Nailhead? Is an Olds Rocket what makes your missile launch? Or is it the Pontiac overhead-cam inline 6? Or are you into something truly strange, like the Peugot blower motor below?

I really can’t think of any unless it’s Ford’s 427 Cammer. But I think some of my buddies know it.

I’d like to mess around with a turbocharged 2.2L Mopar in a RWD 1972 Dodge Colt… maybe see how it would do in comp eliminator.

I have no shame. lol. I am building a Pontiac OHC engine and I want to build a Cadillac 4-6-8 engine, but I readily announce that to the world =P

I would like to mess around with a Ford 2.3 turbo. It would be fun to drop it into an old Courier Pick-up, or there is an original Mercury Bobcat (when was the last time you saw one of those?) in the neighborhood. Maybe drop it in an old Ford Cortina if I could ever find one.

Stranger still, I harbor a secret desire to make a hot rod Fiat 124.

Funny that the article mentioned the Pontiac OHC 6 because have I wanted to build one of those for the longest time and drop in a 33 Ford pick up. I have the exact truck in mind too.It belongs to my cousin. He’s had it sitting around for some 30 – 40 years with a grenaded small block in it.

How about an AMC six with one of Barney Navarro’s experimental “Indy” heads? Even better, make it an aluminum-blocked Rambler version…

  7. Ville haga

I think this is Renault R12 Gordini engine. Same engine, as I used to drive my Renault R8 Dragracecar.

I could be wrong but Offys were turbocharged with as much as 60# of boost. The heads were a machined part of the block.

What I’d really like to get my hands on is the FORD 4.0L Inline 6 called:

    ‘F6 270 Turbo’ or Barra 270T

This is the most powerful I6 ever produced by Ford. Production commenced in 2004 and it is found in the BA/BF Falcon based FPV F6 Typhoon and Tornado models. The increase in power is achieved through the use of a Garrett GT3540 turbocharger. NOT available in the USA to go in my – http://VictoriaTx.us/SVI_0599.jpg

    Bore: 92.26 mm (3.6 in)
    Stroke: 99.31 mm (3.9 in)
    Displacement: 3984 cc
    Number of valves: 24
    Power: 270 kW (362 hp) @ 5250 RPM
    Torque: 550 N·m (406 ft·lbf) @ 2000-4000 RPM

Can you get me one BangShift ?

I want an Offenhauser. Blown or na this would be a great motor for a sandrail or a hot rod. That’s like a street rod with hair.

    1. darryl nagy

a mercury 4cyl boat engine . its uses a 460 ford head [ cast iron ] bore and stroke, rods and pistons its half a 460 [ stock ] and the block is all so aluminum .[ stock] swap head for a boss nine head, boost it, , bore and stroke it to 300 inches . not sure about the bell housing not ford or chevy. win lotter and screw it togeather . install in a 4130 tube frame 64 65 falcon make it super light and go import hunting.

  10. CJ Wilson

I’d like to try a Chevy 307. Yeah, yeah everyone hates them, but there’s no real reason why it shouldn’t be a good engine. There was a very limited edition factory ‘performance’ 307 from about 67 or 68 that theoretically made like 325 HP.

  11. Robert

I would like a turbo quad 4 adapted to “north-south” rear wheel drive in a track T style roadster.

  12. RiverRatRambler

side-by-side 258 inline 6’s run one backwards and pair them up at the flywheels. 516 ci. in grandmas Rambler!
